UNA EUROPA PhD Workshops at the Freie Universität Berlin

UNA EUROPA PhD Workshops at the Freie Universität Berlin

UNA EUROPA PhD Workshops at the Freie Universität Berlin

As last year FUB will be offering two PhD Workshops from April 2-3, 2020. The PhD workshops will be organized in cooperation with the University Alliance for Sustainability (UAS) and will take place within the framework of our annual UAS Spring Campus. PhD Candidates from all 12 UAS and UNA partner universities will be thematically grouped in two parallel running workshops. We encourage every university to select 5 students for participation. PhD Workshops are coordinated – with support from the UAS program management – by professors from the UAS partner universities. We would therefore be delighted, if professors from the UNA partner universities would be interested in co-hosting the PhD workshop II with Dr. Berthold Kuhn.

Please find attached the Calls for Application for the PhD Workshops offered in the framework of the Spring Campus Conference:

  • PhD Workshop I: "Unlocking and Transitioning – Strategies and Policies for a Sustainable World" organized by Prof. Kurt Hübner (University of British Columbia)
  • PhD Workshop II: "Sustainable Development Research – an Interdisciplinary Chance or Challenge?" organized by PD Dr. Berthold Kuhn (Freie Universität Berlin)

The selection of up to 5 PhD students should be facilitated by each UNA member university. Please send us a list of names and contact details of the selected PhD students by February 10. Selected PhD students should forward their short abstracts to uas@fu-berlin.de as outlined in the Calls. The participation in the PhD Workshop on April 2-3, 2020 is free of charge for UNA candidates. If they wish to participate in the main conference from March 31- April 1, the conference fees for non-UAS PhD students apply: https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/sites/spring-campus/04_Registration/index.html UNA member universities are expected to cover the costs for travel and accommodation.

University Alliance for Sustainability

Spring Campus Conference 2020 | Commitments for Future: Sustainability in Higher Education

Freie Universität Berlin, March 30 – April 3, 2020

We would like to remind you that the deadline for submissions of abstracts for oral & poster presentations for the 5th Spring Campus Conference of the University Alliance for Sustainability: “Commitments for Future: Sustainability in Higher Education” is on February 10, 2020. The conference will be hosted at Freie Universität Berlin from March 30 – April 3, 2020.

Program focus and objectives

In 2019, social movements raised the awareness of climate change and sustainability in public and scientific discourse, urging political leaders, business executives, and public institutions to “act now, not later”. This discourse has also reached Higher Education Institutions around the world. While sustainability has been increasingly rooted in research, teaching, and on the university campus, the current development has brought a new political and social dimension to campus:

-          How do universities as public institutions respond to calls for action from their community and stakeholders?

-          How do universities shape their governance structures in light of new participatory demands?

-          How does the current discourse impact the societal and political role of universities?

Freie Universität Berlin is the first university in Germany to declare a climate emergency and thus to join renowned international universities that put the topic of climate protection and sustainability in the focus of their institutional practice. The Opening Day on March 30th will address those commitment questions in key notes as well as in a panel discussion focusing on the core pillars of Higher Education Institutions: research, teaching, campus & management, and transfer & outreach activities.

On Tuesday and Wednesday (March 31 – April 1), we will continue with a program of parallel research and management workshops:

  • Workshop I: "Financial Markets and Sustainable Development in Times of Climate Change" organized by Kurt Hübner (University of British Columbia), Berthold Kuhn (Freie Universität Berlin) and Itay Fishhendler (Hebrew University)
  • Workshop II: "From Innovation to Acceptance: Challenges and Potentials of a Sustainable Energy Transition" organized by Dr. Maria Rosaria di Nucci and Bettina Tacke (Freie Universität Berlin)
  • Workshop III: "Higher Education for Sustainability in Turbulent Times"  organized by Prof. Inka Bormann, Dr. Mandy Singer-Brodowski and Nora Große (Freie Universität Berlin) and Robert VanWhynsberghe (University of British Columbia)
  • Workshop IV: "Digitalization: Opportunities, Challenges and Impacts on Sustainability Management in Higher Education" organized by Andreas Wanke and Katrin Schweigel (Freie Universität Berlin)

Additionally, a PhD Conference will be organized, which will conclude the Spring Campus with a two-day meeting on Thursday and Friday (April 2 – 3).

We invite researchers, practitioners, PhD students to submit contributions for the research and management workshops. Additionally, a PhD Workshop will be organized, which will conclude the Spring Campus Conference with a two-day meeting on Thursday and Friday (April 2 – 3). Further information and the calls for contributions for the Spring Campus Conference 2020 are available on this website.
